The cat is out of the bag!!

Postby Craig » April 14th, 2012, 9:53 am

Ladies & Gentlemen,

Messrs Osprey & Sons have announced a most excellent tabletop diversion called In Her Majesty's Name. One may peruse it thusly: http://www.ospreypublishing.com/blog/Os ... /#comments

I await the ritual flaying of the author... :D

Seriously though guys I was approached before Christmas to produce this slim volume and have been beavering away ever since. As I was locked down by a non-disclosure agrement I could say nothing about it, and I still have to be somewhat careful now.

I can tell you one thing, writing something that you are going to sell is a great deal harder than producing something for friends like yourselves. My original collaborator fell away in January and I recently took on a friend who is not only a wargamer of over thirty years standing but also has major league project management experience to make me finish the damned thing. He also lives close enough to bully me in person.

Do please ask questions if you wish but I may not be able to answer all of them to your full satisfaction until closer to the release date.
Cheers,
Craig.

On the Yahoo Group I had a set of questions from Noah, and I thought it might help clarify things If I repeated my answers here:

Q1. What's the difference in the system between IHMN and ITEN?
A1. Now that would be telling... ;)
Q2. Do you plan on rewriting ITEN using any changes?
A2. What? And interrupt my plans for domination of the world of gaming?
Q3. Is there a generic scifi version of IHMN coming, or is it close enough already?
A3. Yes, it's called 'Blaster!' and it is currently in dry dock until I finish this commission.

I got this commission because the guys at Osprey liked the concept and execution of ItEN. However, writing a rule set for a small and like-minded community like ours is relatively simple. Producing a set for the wargaming community at large that is good enough for them to want to part with their hard-earned cash for it is quite another, even with the backing of such a respected name as Osprey.

The starting point was ItEN but the game has grown and developed in ways I would never have thought of at the beginning of the process. I expect that you guys will recognise its parentage, but it has been changed considerably to make it playable by people without the perspective and chutzpah of a community of game tinkerers and developers.

I expect that once it is out there we may want to make changes to ItEN and Blaster form what we learned from writing IHMN, but that is a community decision. I don't feel that I 'own' ItEN any more than I 'own' FUBAR, it is ours. And I will never commercialise either as I made that promise to you all a long time ago.

But hey, this is all speculation at the moment. Charles and I are working damn hard to make IHMN as good a set of rules as we can. However, it could still bomb and we are grateful to the guys at Osprey, especially Phil, who are willing to risk a lot by backing it.

I hope that answers the key questions. At the moment I cannot flesh out too much detail because we are still writing the rules and we don't want to give too much away before it is finished.

Continue to feel free to ask questions though.
Cheers,
Craig.

No questions for now, just a 'best wishes' from me for you and the project.

I've done a bit of 'proof-reading/testing' in the past for friends of mine for commercially produced rules and so I have great appreciation for the hard work you have now and ahead of you. (One set has just been published by Partizan Press - Setting The East Ablaze - tho I'm not yet sure what comments of mine made it past the censor!). Sounds good that you have a 'motivator' to support you :)
